Why Booking Luxury Hotels Direct Is Almost Always the Wrong Move

Luxury hotels would very much like you to book direct. The industry-wide "book direct" campaign has been running for nearly a decade, promising the best available rate, bonus loyalty points, and priority service to guests who bypass OTAs and call the hotel directly. The message is persuasive and not entirely dishonest. But for travellers who qualify for preferred advisor benefits, it represents a worse outcome than the alternative on almost every dimension.

The core misunderstanding is about rates. "Best Available Rate" is exactly what it says: the best rate available to a member of the general public. Preferred advisor programs — the agreements that allow advisors like VOYA to access wholesale or consortium rates — operate outside this rate structure. In many cases, the VOYA rate for a given property is equivalent to or lower than the best available public rate, while also including $100 in hotel credits, daily breakfast, a room upgrade, and early/late checkout. The hotel is not losing money on this arrangement; it has pre-negotiated these benefits as part of its relationship with the advisor network.

The loyalty points argument is more compelling for heavy brand loyalists. If you are working toward a specific status threshold with Marriott Bonvoy or IHG One Rewards, and the points from a direct booking would close that gap, the calculation shifts. VOYA always evaluates this scenario for clients with strong loyalty positions. But for most travellers, the concrete value of preferred advisor benefits — breakfast alone at a luxury property often represents $60–$100 per day for a couple — far exceeds the value of points that will eventually be redeemed for a free night at a fraction of their face value.

There is also a service dimension that direct booking does not capture. VOYA's bookings arrive at a hotel's reservations team with a context that a direct booking cannot replicate: our clients are known to the property, our relationship with the general manager creates accountability, and any issue that arises during a stay has a knowledgeable advocate in our team who can resolve it at the correct level. This is not a theoretical benefit. It has, on multiple occasions, been the difference between a disrupted stay and a remarkable one.

The exception to this principle: loyalty program redemptions. If you are redeeming points for a free night or using a credit card companion certificate, direct booking is the only mechanism available. VOYA works alongside loyalty redemptions rather than against them — we can often apply preferred benefits on top of points stays where the program allows, extending the value of the redemption beyond the free room alone.

The practical recommendation is straightforward: before booking any luxury hotel by any method, speak with VOYA first. The conversation takes fifteen minutes and the outcome is almost always a better stay at no additional cost. The only thing direct booking reliably offers that advisor booking does not is the hotel's satisfaction at having captured the booking commission for themselves.
